SEO vs GEO vs AEO is less a choice than a question of where you want to appear. SEO earns rankings in search results, AEO earns direct answers such as featured snippets and voice replies, and GEO earns citations inside AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. The same well-built page can earn all three.
The terms get muddled because people use them differently, and some vendors sell AEO or GEO as a separate service. Google’s position, set out in its May 2026 guide to generative AI features, is direct: optimizing for AI search on Google is still SEO. Other AI tools do add a few genuinely new jobs.
This guide gives you a sourced glossary, a map of real surfaces, what differs outside Google, and a small-budget plan for doing and measuring the work.
Key takeaways
- SEO targets ranked results, AEO targets direct answers like featured snippets, and GEO targets citations in AI-generated answers.
- Google says optimizing for AI Overviews and AI Mode is still SEO, with no need for llms.txt, special markup or chunked content.
- ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot add real differences: their own crawlers, other search indexes such as Bing, and what other sites say about you.
- Free first-party reports now measure AI visibility: Search Console’s Generative AI report, Bing’s AI Performance report and GA4’s AI Assistant channel.
- Treat AEO and GEO as extensions of your SEO plan, not a separate budget, unless a vendor shows exactly what differs.
What do SEO, GEO and AEO actually mean?
All three describe making your content easy for a search system to find, trust and show. They differ in the surface they target and in how settled each definition is.
| Term | Stands for | What it aims for | Where the definition comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Search engine optimization | Crawlable, indexable pages that rank in search results, including rich results | Established practice, documented by search engines such as Google Search Central and Bing Webmaster Tools |
| AEO | Answer engine optimization | Being the direct answer: featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice replies and, in newer usage, AI answers | Industry usage with no standards body; Google groups it with GEO as work aimed at AI search visibility |
| GEO | Generative engine optimization | Being cited or mentioned when an AI system writes an answer from several sources | A 2023 research paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, accepted to the KDD 2024 conference |
| AIO, LLMO | AI optimization, large language model optimization | The same goal as GEO under different names | Agency and vendor usage |
What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization is the work of becoming the answer a search tool gives directly, rather than one link among ten. Older articles use AEO for featured snippets, People Also Ask and voice assistants, while newer ones treat it as a synonym for GEO. When someone pitches you AEO, ask which surfaces they mean.
What is generative engine optimization?
Generative engine optimization is the work of getting your content cited or mentioned when an AI system writes an answer from several sources. The term was introduced in a 2023 research paper that framed AI search tools as generative engines and proposed ways to measure and improve visibility in their answers.
The platforms don’t share one vocabulary. Google’s guide describes AEO and GEO as labels for work on AI search visibility, then says that for Google Search this work is still SEO. Microsoft calls its new citation reporting in Bing Webmaster Tools an early step toward GEO tooling.
SEO vs GEO vs AEO: which search surfaces does each term target?
Each label maps to a different set of screens where your business can appear. This table shows the surfaces that matter in 2026, where their sources come from and how to check your visibility.
| Surface | What people see | Where sources come from | Usual label | How to check visibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google organic results | Ranked links, often with rich results | Google’s index (Googlebot) | SEO | Search Console Performance report |
| Featured snippets and People Also Ask | A quoted passage above or within the results | Google’s index; the page must allow snippets | AEO (original sense) | Manual checks; clicks count in Search Console |
| Google AI Overviews | An AI summary with links on the normal results page | Google’s index, using query fan-out | GEO or AEO; Google calls it SEO | Search Console Performance and Generative AI reports |
| Google AI Mode | A conversational AI answer with links and follow-up questions | Google’s index, using query fan-out | GEO or AEO; Google calls it SEO | Search Console Performance and Generative AI reports |
| ChatGPT search | An answer with cited sources | OAI-SearchBot crawl plus third-party search providers | GEO | GA4 AI Assistant channel; prompt tests |
| Perplexity | An answer with cited sources | PerplexityBot crawl and live web search | GEO or AEO | Referral visits in GA4; prompt tests |
| Microsoft Copilot and Bing AI summaries | AI answers citing web pages | Bing’s search index (Bingbot) | GEO | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report |
| Gemini app | AI answers that can be grounded in Google Search | Google’s index; the Google-Extended token controls grounding use | GEO | GA4 AI Assistant channel; prompt tests |
| Voice assistants | One spoken answer | Varies by assistant | AEO (original sense) | No reliable reporting; spot checks |
Notice the pattern. Every Google surface draws on the same Search index, while the third-party tools depend on their own crawlers and on other search indexes, notably Bing. That split explains most of the practical differences below.
What does Google say about GEO and AEO?
Google says optimizing for its generative AI features is optimizing for search, and therefore still SEO. Its AI optimization guide, published in May 2026, explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode use its core ranking systems to retrieve pages from the normal Search index, then ground their answers in those pages.
In practice, a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and the site must be included through the Search generative AI control in Search Console (Settings → Search generative AI), which reached all sites by August 31, 2026 and is on by default. The guide also lists popular tactics Google Search doesn’t use:
- llms.txt and other AI files: Google Search ignores them, so they neither help nor harm your Google visibility.
- Chunking: there’s no need to cut pages into tiny pieces; Google can find the relevant part of a longer page.
- Rewriting for AI: no special writing style is required, and you don’t need every long-tail variation of a query.
- Inauthentic mentions: seeding mentions across the web helps less than it seems, since Google’s AI features rely on the same spam protections as Search.
- Special schema: structured data isn’t required for AI features, although it still earns rich results.
Google also says no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems, and its June 2026 guidance on third-party SEO advice names AEO and GEO tools specifically. For step-by-step tactics, see our guide on earning a place in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.
What genuinely differs for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot?
Four things change outside Google: the crawlers you must allow, the search index each tool relies on, the role of what other sites say about you, and how you measure results. None of them needs a separate content strategy, but each needs a deliberate check.
Crawler access
ChatGPT search relies on OAI-SearchBot, and Perplexity on PerplexityBot. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot won’t be shown in ChatGPT search answers, apart from bare navigational links. Training crawlers are a separate decision: blocking OpenAI’s GPTBot or Google’s Google-Extended token doesn’t remove you from ChatGPT search or Google Search.
The Bing index
Microsoft Copilot fetches its web results from Bing, and OpenAI says ChatGPT search draws partly on third-party search providers. If Bing has barely crawled your site, Copilot has little of yours to cite and ChatGPT has one fewer route to you. That makes Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow worth setting up even if Google sends most of your traffic.
Mentions and citations
AI answers are assembled from several sources, so what directories, review sites, forums and news articles say about you shapes whether you get recommended. This is where GEO looks most like classic PR: earn genuine mentions and keep your business facts consistent. Our playbook on getting your business recommended by ChatGPT and Perplexity covers the steps.
What about llms.txt?
llms.txt is a proposed standard, first published by Jeremy Howard in September 2024, for a Markdown file that summarizes a site for AI tools. Google Search ignores it. Add one only if a tool you care about reads it, and never as a substitute for fixing crawler access or content.
What should a small business do first?
Start with the AI search optimization work that pays off on every surface at once: indexing, crawler access, clear answers and consistent facts. Add the GEO-specific tasks after that.
| Priority | Action | Helps with | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Verify Google Search Console, import the site into Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap to both | SEO, AEO, GEO | Low |
| 2 | Check robots.txt, CDN and firewall rules for Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot | SEO, GEO | Low |
| 3 | Rewrite your main service pages and your 10 most common buyer questions answer-first, with first-hand detail | SEO, AEO, GEO | Medium |
| 4 | Make your business facts identical on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places and key directories | SEO, GEO | Low |
| 5 | Add Organization or LocalBusiness structured data that matches the visible page | SEO | Low |
| 6 | Earn genuine mentions: reviews, partner pages, local press and industry lists | SEO, GEO | High, ongoing |
| 7 | Run a monthly measurement routine (next section) | All three | Low |
If you’re starting from scratch, our 90-day SEO plan for small businesses puts most of these steps on a schedule, and our guide to schema markup for small businesses covers step 5. Planning to draft pages with AI? Read what Google says about AI-generated content first. If you’d rather hand the list over, an SEO specialist can run steps 1 to 5 as a single project.
How do you measure SEO, AEO and GEO on a small budget?
Use free first-party reports first and a manual prompt log second. Paid AI visibility trackers can help at scale, but none of them sees Google’s internal data.
| What you want to know | Tool | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Google clicks and impressions, including AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google Search Console | Performance → Search results, Web search type |
| Which pages appear in Google’s AI features | Google Search Console | Generative AI performance report: impressions by page, country, device and date |
| Citations in Copilot and Bing AI answers | Bing Webmaster Tools | AI Performance: total citations, cited pages and grounding queries |
| Visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and similar tools | Google Analytics 4 | Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, AI Assistant channel |
| Share of voice in AI answers | A spreadsheet | A monthly log of 10 to 20 fixed buyer prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot |
Two limits are worth knowing. Search Console’s generative AI report groups data by page, not by query, so pair it with your own query checks. And GA4’s AI Assistant channel excludes Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, which GA4 counts as Organic Search.
For share of voice, Bing’s Citation Share metric, in preview since June 2026, shows what percentage of all citations for a grounding query went to your site. Your prompt log does a similar job for ChatGPT and Perplexity: count how often you’re named against your competitors, month over month.
Do you need a separate GEO or AEO agency?
Usually not. The SEO vs GEO vs AEO labels matter less than the work behind them, and for most small businesses one provider can handle all three, as long as it explains which tasks differ for AI tools. Be cautious if a vendor:
- promises guaranteed placement in AI Overviews or ChatGPT answers;
- sells llms.txt or special markup as a fix for Google visibility;
- proposes hundreds of near-identical pages to cover every query variation, which Google treats as scaled content abuse;
- offers to plant reviews or forum mentions, which breaks platform rules and spam policies;
- claims access to “internal” Google metrics or scores.
Good providers report with first-party data from Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and GA4, and they label opinions as opinions. Our questions to ask before hiring an SEO company work just as well for AI search vendors.

Frequently asked questions
Is GEO replacing SEO?
GEO is not replacing SEO. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on its core Search ranking systems, so SEO remains the foundation for Google’s AI features. GEO adds a handful of tasks for tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot, including crawler access, Bing indexing and third-party mentions, and those tasks build on SEO rather than replace it.
Is AEO the same as voice search optimization?
AEO overlaps with voice search optimization but covers more ground. In its older sense, answer engine optimization meant earning the single answer a search engine or voice assistant gives, such as a featured snippet read aloud. Many marketers now also use AEO for AI-generated answers. Voice search optimization is one part of AEO: concise, direct answers to spoken, question-style queries.
Does blocking GPTBot remove my website from ChatGPT answers?
Blocking GPTBot does not remove a website from ChatGPT search. OpenAI uses GPTBot to collect content that may train its models and OAI-SearchBot to surface sites in ChatGPT search, and each robots.txt setting works independently. A business can disallow GPTBot for training reasons while allowing OAI-SearchBot, so its pages can still be cited in ChatGPT search answers.
How long does it take for changes to show up in AI search?
Timing depends on the platform and the type of change. OpenAI says ChatGPT search takes about 24 hours to reflect a robots.txt update, and Perplexity says its systems can take up to 24 hours. Google notes that recrawling a page can take from several days to several months. Content edits appear in AI answers only after the page has been recrawled.
Does schema markup help with GEO?
Schema markup helps with GEO only indirectly and is not a shortcut. Google says structured data is not required for its generative AI features and that no special schema.org markup exists for them, though it still recommends structured data for rich results. For other AI tools, accurate Organization and LocalBusiness markup that matches the visible page is a low-cost way to state business facts clearly.
