Google Analytics 4 for Beginners: Setup and the Reports That Matter

A plain-English GA4 setup for business owners: property, data stream and Google tag, key events, consent mode, the few reports worth reading, links to Search Console and Google Ads, and the mistakes that skew your data.

Google Analytics 4 for beginners comes down to four jobs: create a property with a web data stream, install the Google tag once, mark the actions that matter as key events, and read a handful of reports. Traffic acquisition, Landing page and Pages and screens answer most business questions. Everything else can wait until those work.

This guide uses GA4’s current 2026 menu names, including key events, which replaced the old term “conversions” in Analytics. It covers setup, consent mode, the reports worth your time, links to Search Console and Google Ads, and the setup mistakes that quietly distort your numbers.

Key takeaways

  • Set up an account, a property and one web data stream, then install the Google tag once, not through several plugins.
  • Enhanced measurement tracks page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, downloads, video and form events without code.
  • Mark real business actions, such as inquiries, bookings and purchases, as key events; don’t mark page views or scrolls.
  • Use a consent banner with consent mode if you have visitors from the EEA, the UK or Switzerland.
  • Filter internal traffic, set data retention to 14 months, and link Search Console and Google Ads in the first week.

How is GA4 different from Universal Analytics?

GA4 records everything as events, such as a page view, a click or a form submission, instead of the sessions-and-pageviews model of Universal Analytics. Universal Analytics is gone: Google removed access to its data and interface from July 2024, so GA4 is the only version you can use.

Three changes confuse most beginners:

  • Key events replace goals. You choose which events matter to the business and mark them; Google Ads keeps the word “conversions” for the actions it bids toward.
  • Engagement replaces bounce rate as the focus. An engaged session lasts longer than 10 seconds, includes a key event or has at least two page views.
  • Report menus vary by property. If you chose a business objective during setup, you get a Business objectives collection, such as Generate leads, instead of the older Life cycle menus.

How to set up Google Analytics 4: a step-by-step guide for beginners

Create an account, a property and a web data stream, then add the tag. Google’s setup guide follows this order:

  1. Go to analytics.google.com and click Start measuring. If you already have an account, add a property to it (Admin, Create, Property) unless this site belongs to a separate business.
  2. Name the property and choose the reporting time zone and currency. Pick the time zone you make decisions in; changing it later only affects data going forward.
  3. Select your industry and business size, then how you intend to use Analytics. Choosing Generate more leads gives you lead-focused reports.
  4. Add a Web data stream with your website address and a stream name, and leave Enhanced measurement switched on.
  5. Copy the Measurement ID, which starts with G-, from the stream details. You’ll need it to install the tag.

Use one property per business and one web stream per website. Extra properties for the same site split your data and make every report harder to trust.

How do you install the Google tag?

Install it once, using the method that suits your platform. Data can take up to 30 minutes to appear; check the Realtime report to confirm visits are arriving.

To check for duplicates, open Tag Assistant at tagassistant.google.com and load your site. Then use Admin, Data display, DebugView to watch events arrive one by one while you click around.

What does enhanced measurement track automatically?

Enhanced measurement collects common interactions without code changes. Google’s documentation lists what triggers each event:

EventWhen it firesBusiness use
page_viewEvery page load; can’t be switched offWhich pages people read
scrollThe first time a visitor reaches 90% of a page’s depthWhether long service pages are read
click (outbound)A click on a link to another domainClicks to WhatsApp, marketplaces or booking sites
view_search_resultsA results page with q, s, search, query or keyword in the URLWhat visitors search for on your site
video_start, video_progress, video_completePlays of embedded YouTube videos with JavaScript API supportWhether product or explainer videos are watched
file_downloadA click on a link to a PDF, spreadsheet, ZIP or similar fileBrochure and price list downloads
form_start, form_submitThe first form interaction in a session, and a form submissionHow many people start versus send a form
GA4 enhanced measurement events

Test form_submit before you rely on it: with some form plugins it can miss submissions or count failed attempts, so a thank-you page is often the more dependable signal. Phone link clicks aren’t covered, and WhatsApp clicks are easier to report with a dedicated event; our guide to tracking forms, calls and sales shows how.

How do you set up GA4 key events?

Mark the events that represent real business results as key events: inquiries, bookings, calls, WhatsApp chats and purchases. GA4 marks purchase as a key event by default; the rest are up to you.

Mark an existing event

Go to Admin, Data display, Events, find the event in the Recent events list and click the star icon next to it. Marking an event only affects data from that moment on; it doesn’t change historic reports, and standard reports can take up to 24 hours to show it.

Create a key event from a thank-you page

If your form sends people to a confirmation page, you can create a key event without code:

  1. In Admin, Data display, Events, click Create event.
  2. Name it generate_lead, Google’s recommended name for a lead, which also populates GA4’s Lead acquisition report.
  3. Switch on Mark as key event, then choose Create without code.
  4. Pick page_view as the source event, enter your thank-you page URL and click Create.
  5. Submit a test inquiry and confirm the event in DebugView or Realtime.

Don’t mark page_view or scroll as key events: they happen on almost every visit and make every channel look successful. Note that linking Google Ads with personalized advertising switched on automatically marks some events, including session_start, as key events, so report on your lead and sale events by name rather than the key events total.

You need a consent banner if visitors from the EEA, the UK or Switzerland use your site: Google’s EU user consent policy requires valid consent from those users for cookies and ad personalization. Consent mode is how the banner tells Google’s tags what each visitor chose. Check the privacy rules in your other markets too.

Consent mode passes each visitor’s choice from your banner to Google’s tags; it doesn’t provide the banner itself. It comes in two versions:

  • Basic: Google tags don’t load until the visitor interacts with the banner, and nothing is sent if they decline.
  • Advanced: tags load with consent denied by default and send cookieless pings until the visitor accepts, which gives Google more to model from.

Many consent management platforms send consent mode signals for you. For a Pakistani business selling to UK customers, this matters as soon as UK visitors arrive, not only when you open an office there.

Which GA4 reports should a business owner check?

Five reports answer most questions: where visitors come from, which pages they enter on, what they read, whether key events fire and whether tracking works right now. Menu paths below are for the standard Life cycle collection; in a Business objectives collection, look under the objective, such as Generate leads.

The GA4 reports that matter for a small business

In Traffic acquisition, add the key events column and compare channels by key events, not by sessions. Which of these numbers become your monthly KPIs is covered in our guide to digital marketing KPIs.

When to use Explorations

Click Explore when a standard report can’t answer the question. A Free form exploration builds a table such as landing page by channel with key events, and a Funnel exploration shows where people drop out between your service page, contact page and thank-you page. Explorations only reach back as far as your data retention setting, which is one reason to raise it to 14 months.

Both links live in Admin, Product links, and each takes a couple of minutes. You need the Editor role in GA4, plus verified ownership in Search Console or admin access in Google Ads.

  • Search Console: click Search Console links, then Link, and choose your property and web stream. The Search Console reports are unpublished by default, so publish the collection from Library. Google notes the reports hold up to 16 months of data, with a 48-hour delay.
  • Google Ads: click Google Ads links, choose the account and keep auto-tagging on. You can then create Google Ads conversions from your key events and see campaign data in GA4.
  • Google Business Profile: click Google Business Profile links to bring calls, direction requests and website clicks into GA4.

With Search Console linked, the queries report shows the Google searches that led to your site next to what those visitors did, which is the core of a good monthly SEO report.

What are the most common GA4 setup mistakes?

Most GA4 problems come from a handful of setup errors that inflate or split your data. Check these in your first week:

  • Duplicate tags: a plugin, the theme and Tag Manager all load the tag, doubling page views. Tag Assistant shows how many tags fire.
  • Your own visits counted: define internal traffic under Data streams, Configure tag settings, Show more, Define internal traffic, then create an Internal Traffic data filter. Start it in Testing, because an active filter permanently excludes data.
  • Missing cross-domain setup: if bookings or checkout happen on another domain, add both domains under Configure your domains, using the same G- ID on each.
  • Data retention left at two months: set event data retention to 14 months in Admin. It doesn’t affect standard reports, but it limits Explorations.
  • Too many key events: if scrolls and page views count as key events, every report looks good and none is useful.
  • No links to other Google tools: without Search Console and Google Ads links, you can’t see queries or tie ad spend to results.

Pakistan note

If customers pay on a bank or payment gateway page and then return to your site, add that domain under Configure tag settings, List unwanted referrals. Otherwise the sale can be credited to the payment page instead of the ad, search or social post that brought the customer.

Once tracking is reliable, put the numbers to work in your digital marketing plan, or ask our digital marketing team to audit the setup for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Analytics 4 free?

Google Analytics 4 is free for standard properties, which cover most small and medium businesses. Google also sells Google Analytics 360, a paid version with higher limits, longer data retention options and service agreements for large organizations. A small business website, blog or online store rarely needs 360, and every feature in this guide works on a free GA4 property.

Why doesn’t GA4 match my Google Ads or Shopify numbers?

GA4 rarely matches Google Ads or Shopify exactly because each platform counts differently. Visitors who decline cookies, ad blockers, different attribution models and time zone settings all create gaps, and Shopify records every order in its own system even when tracking is blocked. Look for similar trends rather than identical totals, and investigate only large or sudden differences.

How long does GA4 take to show data?

GA4 shows new visits in the Realtime report within about 30 minutes of installing the Google tag. Standard reports can take up to 24 hours to include new events and newly marked key events. Search Console data linked into GA4 arrives with a delay of around 48 hours, so wait a few days before judging a new setup.

Can GA4 track WhatsApp and phone call clicks?

GA4 can track clicks on WhatsApp and phone buttons as events, which you can then mark as key events. Enhanced measurement records clicks on wa.me links as outbound clicks, but a dedicated event set up in Google Tag Manager is easier to report on. Phone link clicks always need a custom event. GA4 counts the click, not whether the chat or call happened.
