Facebook ads for beginners come down to five steps in Meta Ads Manager: set up a business portfolio and ad account, install the Meta Pixel, pick the objective that matches your goal, keep Advantage+ budget, audience and placements on, and launch with a realistic budget. Then leave the campaign alone while it learns, and judge it on cost per result.
The setup has changed. For Sales, Leads and App promotion campaigns, Ads Manager now starts you in the Advantage+ setup, where Meta’s AI handles budget, audience and placements unless you narrow them. This guide explains what to accept, what to change and which beginner mistakes waste the first budget.

Key takeaways
- Set up a business portfolio, an ad account, your Facebook Page and the Meta Pixel before you create a campaign.
- Ads Manager has six objectives; pick Sales, Leads or Traffic by the action you actually want people to take.
- Most beginners should keep Advantage+ budget, audience and placements on; narrowing any of them switches Advantage+ off.
- Meta says an ad set usually leaves the learning phase after about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit.
- Housing, employment, financial and political ads must use a Special Ad Category, which limits targeting.
Facebook ads for beginners: what do you need first?
You need a Facebook Page, a business portfolio in Meta Business Suite, an ad account with a payment method and, ideally, the Meta Pixel on your website. Setting them up in this order keeps your business, not one person’s profile, in control of the assets. Not sure Meta is the right place to start? Compare the two platforms in our Google Ads vs Facebook ads guide.
1. Create a business portfolio
- Go to business.facebook.com, open the dropdown below Home at the top left and click Create a business portfolio.
- Enter your public business name (no special characters), your name and a business email, then confirm the email Meta sends you.
- Add your Facebook Page and Instagram account. Each asset can belong to only one business portfolio, so add assets from the portfolio your business will keep.
2. Create your ad account
In Business Suite, go to Settings → Accounts → Ad accounts → + Add → Create a new ad account. Enter the account name, time zone and currency, choose My business, accept the terms and add payment info. An ad account created inside a portfolio stays there permanently, and a new portfolio can create only one ad account until a campaign delivers and a payment is made.
Pakistan note
Choose the time zone and currency you want to report and pay in. For Pakistan and the UAE, Meta’s accepted payment options are credit cards or co-branded debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) and PayPal in its accepted currencies. If your bank declines the charge, ask it to enable international online payments on the card.
How do you set up the Meta Pixel and Conversions API?
The Meta Pixel is code on your website that records actions, called events, such as a purchase or a form submission. The Conversions API sends the same events from your server, platform or CRM. Use both where you can: Meta says server events are less affected by browser loading errors, connectivity issues and ad blockers.
- Create the pixel in Events Manager, then install it through your website platform’s Meta integration or by adding the code manually.
- Track the standard events that match your goal, such as
Lead,Contact,ScheduleorPurchase, rather than page views alone. - Add the Conversions API through your platform’s integration where one exists; Meta says many setups don’t need a developer.
- Keep prohibited information, such as health or financial data, out of event names, URLs and parameters.
- Check that events arrive in Events Manager before you launch a Sales or Leads campaign that optimizes for them.
Which Meta ads objective should a beginner choose?
Choose the objective that matches the action you want, because Meta optimizes delivery for it. Ads Manager has six simplified objectives: Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales.
| Objective | Choose it when | Beginner note |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness | You’re new or have changed your name and want people to remember you | Hard to tie to revenue, so rarely the right first campaign |
| Traffic | You want visits to a page, or conversations in Messenger or WhatsApp | Clicks aren’t customers; check what visitors do next |
| Engagement | You want messages, video views or responses to your ad | One of the objectives that supports click-to-WhatsApp ads |
| Leads | You want form fills, calls or message leads | Usually the best fit for service businesses |
| App promotion | You want installs or in-app actions | Only relevant if you have an app |
| Sales | You want purchases, or other valuable actions such as add to cart | Needs the pixel sending purchase events |
Does your ad need a Special Ad Category?
If you advertise housing, employment, financial products and services, or social issues, elections or politics, you must declare a Special Ad Category when you create the campaign, or your ads may be rejected. Meta has replaced the old Credit category with Financial products and services.
For housing, employment and financial ads based in or reaching the US, or reaching Canada and certain European countries, Meta limits age, gender, postal code, exclusion, lookalike and saved-audience targeting. Social issue and political ads may need authorization and a “Paid for by” disclaimer, and Meta doesn’t allow them in the European Union.
Advantage+ or manual: which settings should you keep?
Keep Advantage+ on for budget, audience and placements unless you have a specific business reason to narrow them. When you choose Sales, Leads or App promotion, Ads Manager shows Advantage+ On at the top right, and each of the three sections shows whether it’s still on.
| Setting | Advantage+ stays on if you | Advantage+ turns off if you |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | Use campaign budget, with one or several ad sets, even with optional spending limits | Run several ad sets without a campaign budget |
| Audience | Set controls and add suggestions, keeping Use as a suggestion checked | Uncheck Use as a suggestion under Further limit the reach of your ads |
| Placements | Use Advantage+ placements | Exclude placements or opt out of mobile or desktop devices |
Suggestions such as age, gender, interests or a customer list tell Meta who you want, but ads can reach other people when that’s likely to perform better. Controls are hard limits: location, minimum age, languages and excluded custom audiences. Set your location to the area you actually serve, because a Lahore bakery gains nothing from clicks in Karachi.
For rules that apply to every campaign, such as a minimum age for your product or countries you can’t ship to, use account-level controls, which don’t switch Advantage+ off. If you exclude a placement, Meta’s Allow limited spend to excluded placements option can still spend up to 5% of the budget on each excluded placement, so untick it if a placement must be fully excluded.
How much should you spend on your first Meta campaign?
Spend enough to get a meaningful number of results in a week, then leave the campaign alone. Meta says the learning phase usually ends after about 50 results in the week after the ad set’s last significant edit; until then performance is unstable and costs tend to be higher.
Example
If you expect a lead to cost around $10, 50 leads in a week means about $500 a week, or roughly $70 a day. If that’s beyond your budget, choose a performance goal that happens more often, or accept that the ad set may show Learning limited.
- Daily or lifetime budget: a daily budget is an average over the week, not a hard cap, while a lifetime budget is a hard cap for the whole run. Meta is gradually giving some accounts daily budget flexibility, which can spend up to 75% over on some days but never more than 7 times the daily budget in a week.
- One campaign, few ad sets: many ad sets split the results Meta needs to learn, so combine similar ones.
- No edits during learning: significant edits, such as big budget, audience or creative changes, can restart the learning phase. Add the Last significant edit column to see when that happened.
What creative works for first-time Facebook advertisers?
Creative that looks like a normal post, shows the product, person or result in the first seconds and makes one clear offer. Make a 4:5 version for Feed and a full-screen vertical version for Stories and Reels, so Meta can use every placement. The same vertical videos can be adapted for TikTok, covered in our TikTok marketing guide.
- Formats: start with a single image or a short video. Use a carousel when you have several products or steps to show, each card with its own link.
- Hook first: open on the thing people care about, not your logo, and add captions, which Meta recommends for Feed video, so the ad still works with the sound off.
- Short text: Meta’s Feed ad specs recommend primary text of 50 to 150 characters and a headline of about 27.
- Real images: your team, premises, work and customers (with permission) usually say more than stock photos.
- Two or three ads per ad set: enough variety for Meta to find a winner without splitting delivery too thinly.
The page the ad links to matters as much as the ad. The same rules in our landing page checklist apply to Meta traffic: one message, a fast mobile page and one obvious next step.
Instant form, website or WhatsApp: where should your ad send people?
Send people wherever you can follow up fastest. Instant forms suit quick lead capture, a website suits purchases and detailed offers, and click-to-WhatsApp suits markets where customers would rather chat.
| Destination | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Instant form (lead ad) | Service businesses that need a name, phone number and one qualifying question | Leads sit in Ads Manager or Leads Center unless you connect a CRM, so check daily and call quickly |
| Website | Online stores and offers that need explanation or checkout | Needs a fast page and working pixel events |
| Click to WhatsApp | Businesses that already sell or book over WhatsApp | Needs a WhatsApp Business account connected to your Page or portfolio, and someone to reply |
| Phone call | Urgent or high-value services | Only works if calls are answered during your ad schedule |
To run a click-to-WhatsApp ad, choose the Traffic or Engagement objective, set the conversion location to Message destinations and tick WhatsApp. The Leads and Sales objectives can also send people to WhatsApp. If you’d like help connecting WhatsApp to your campaigns, our social media advertising team can set it up.
How do you read your first Facebook ads results?
Judge the campaign on Results and Cost per result for the objective you chose, not on likes or reach. Then check the Delivery column to see whether each ad set is active, still Learning or Learning limited.
| Column | What it tells you | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Whether the ad set is Learning, Learning limited or active | If Learning limited, broaden the audience, raise the budget or combine ad sets |
| Results and Cost per result | How many of your chosen actions you got, and at what cost | Compare cost per result with what a customer is worth to you |
| CTR (link click-through rate) | Whether the ad earns clicks from the people who see it | If it’s low, test a new hook or image before touching targeting |
| Frequency | How often the average person has seen your ad | If it climbs while results fall, refresh the creative |
| Last significant edit | When learning last restarted | Wait for about 50 results before the next big change |
Ads Manager only sees what the pixel and your forms report. To connect ad spend to real customers and revenue, use our guide to measuring social media ROI.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run Facebook ads without a Facebook Page?
Most Facebook and Instagram ads run from a Facebook Page, because the Page is the identity people see on the ad. Create a Page for your business, add it to your business portfolio and connect your Instagram account before building a campaign. A Page also gives people somewhere to check your business before they click, message or buy.
Should I boost a post or use Ads Manager?
Boosting promotes an existing Page post with a simple goal, audience, duration and daily budget. Meta Ads Manager gives you the full campaign structure: all six objectives, campaign budgets, several ad sets and ads, every conversion location and full reporting. Boost to amplify a post that is already working; use Ads Manager for a first campaign with a business goal.
How long should a first Meta campaign run before I judge it?
A first Meta campaign should run for at least one to two weeks without significant edits before you judge it. Meta’s delivery system needs time and results to leave the learning phase, and early days are often unstable. Judge the campaign on cost per result over the whole period rather than on the first two or three days.
Do Facebook ads also show on Instagram?
Yes. Campaigns created in Meta Ads Manager can run on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, Threads and the Audience Network. With Advantage+ placements on, Meta chooses where each ad appears based on likely performance. You can pick placements manually, but excluding placements switches Advantage+ placements off.
Why was my Facebook ad rejected?
Meta reviews every Facebook ad against its Advertising Standards before it runs, including the images, text, targeting, landing page and any Special Ad Category. A rejected ad shows its status in the Delivery column of Ads Manager. Read the stated reason, fix the ad or its landing page, and request another review if you believe the decision is wrong.
