Google Ads vs Facebook Ads: Which Is Better for Your Business?

Google catches people who are already searching; Meta reaches them on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp before they search. How the two compare on targeting, cost, creative and tracking, and how to split a budget.

Google Ads vs Facebook Ads comes down to intent. Google Search ads reach people who are already searching for what you sell, so they usually suit urgent services and products people look up by name. Meta ads on Facebook and Instagram reach people before they search, which suits visual products, offers and new ideas. Many businesses end up using both.

The two platforms also charge differently. On Google Search you usually pay when someone clicks; on Meta you’re usually charged for impressions, so your creative has to earn the click. That makes cost per lead or sale, not cost per click, the fair way to compare them.

Below you’ll find a side-by-side table, a verdict for each type of business, example budget splits and a plan for running both platforms together. For setup steps, see our beginner guides to Google Ads for small businesses and running your first Meta campaign.

Key takeaways

  • Start with Google Search when customers already search for your service, and with Meta when you must create demand they don’t search for yet.
  • Google Search usually charges per click and Meta usually per impression, so compare the two on cost per lead or sale.
  • Local and urgent services usually start on Google; visual, impulse and new products usually start on Meta.
  • Click-to-WhatsApp ads send Meta ad clicks straight into a WhatsApp chat, which suits businesses that sell through conversations.
  • Once each platform works alone, run both: retarget Google visitors on Facebook and Instagram, and Meta visitors on Search and YouTube.

Google Search ads answer a question someone has just typed, while Meta ads interrupt someone scrolling Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp. One captures demand that already exists; the other creates it.

That’s why the same offer can perform very differently on each. Someone searching “AC repair DHA Lahore” wants a technician today and will click a relevant ad. The same person scrolling Instagram isn’t thinking about air conditioning until your ad shows a unit failing in the June heat.

Both platforms are bigger than their best-known format. Google Ads also runs YouTube, Shopping, Performance Max and Demand Gen, which Google is folding its Display campaigns into from 2026. Meta’s ads run across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, Threads and the Audience Network from one Ads Manager account. This comparison focuses on what most small budgets start with: Google Search and Shopping against Meta’s feed, Stories and Reels ads.

Google leads on intent and speed when demand already exists; Meta leads on reach, visual storytelling and building an audience. This table compares the factors that decide which one pays back for you.

Which is better for your type of business?

Match the platform to how your customers buy. If they search when they need you, start with Google; if they buy when something catches their eye, start with Meta.

Local service businesses

Plumbers, clinics, repair services, lawyers and tutors are usually best served first by Google Search, because their customers search with urgency and a location. Call assets let people phone straight from the ad. Add Meta second, for seasonal offers, before-and-after visuals and retargeting visitors who didn’t call.

Online stores usually need both. Google Shopping and Performance Max, fed by Google Merchant Center, catch people searching for a product or category. Meta suits products that sell on looks, novelty or impulse, such as fashion, beauty, decor and gifts, where Advantage+ sales campaigns and catalog ads can show each shopper relevant products.

If you sell over WhatsApp or take cash-on-delivery orders, click-to-WhatsApp ads let shoppers ask about sizes, delivery or price before they order. Meta offers them under most objectives, including traffic, engagement, leads and sales, once your WhatsApp Business number is connected to your Facebook Page or business portfolio.

B2B and high-ticket services

Google Search usually comes first, because someone searching “payroll software for small business” or “commercial solar installer Karachi” is already in the market. Meta works as a second layer: retarget site visitors with case studies or a useful guide. If your buyer is defined by job title or company, also compare LinkedIn, which lets you target those directly.

Events, launches and new products

Meta usually leads here, because nobody searches for something they haven’t heard of. Use video in Stories and Reels to build awareness in the weeks before launch, then a small Google Search campaign to catch people searching the event or brand name.

Watch out

Both platforms restrict targeting for housing, employment and credit or financial-product ads aimed at the US and Canada. Google bars age, gender and ZIP code targeting for these ads there, and Meta limits options such as age, gender, postal code and lookalikes, also in parts of Europe. Plan audiences around these limits before you set a budget.

Which costs more, Google Ads or Facebook Ads?

Neither is cheaper by default. What you pay depends on competition for your audience and how well your ads and pages perform, so compare cost per lead or sale rather than cost per click or per thousand impressions.

Google sets your position and price with Ad Rank, built from your bid, the quality of your ad and landing page, minimum thresholds, competition, the context of the search and the expected impact of assets. You often pay less than your maximum bid, because you only pay what’s needed to beat the ad ranked below you.

Meta runs an auction for every ad opportunity and picks the ad with the highest total value: your bid, the estimated chance the person takes your desired action, and ad quality. Meta says a more relevant ad can beat ads with higher bids, which is why creative matters as much as budget.

Costs vary widely by country, industry and season, so ignore generic benchmarks from other markets. Check Keyword Planner’s top-of-page bid ranges for your keywords and location, and Meta’s estimated results in Ads Manager for your audience, then use our method for setting a Google Ads budget.

How should you split a starting budget between Google and Meta?

Put most of a small budget on the platform that matches how your customers buy, fund it enough to learn, and add the second once the first produces leads you can measure. Splitting a small budget evenly usually leaves neither platform with enough data.

Meta says an ad set usually needs about 50 results in a week to leave the learning phase. On a small budget, optimize for a frequent action, such as leads or conversations, and run fewer ad sets so each one gets enough results.

Example

A home-cleaning company in Lahore with PKR 200,000 a month puts PKR 160,000 into Google Search for service-and-area keywords and PKR 40,000 into Meta ads retargeting site visitors with reviews and a first-clean offer. After two months it compares cost per booked job on each platform, not clicks, before moving money.

Can you run Google Ads and Meta ads together?

Yes, and that’s often where both work best: each platform can retarget people the other brought to your site. Set up tracking on both before you spend.

  1. Install both tags on day one. Add the Google tag and the Meta Pixel, ideally with the Conversions API, which sends events from your server and is less affected by browser issues and ad blockers.
  2. Build audiences early. A Meta website custom audience only fills from the day you create it, so set one up for all visitors straight away. Google Ads calls its remarketing lists “your data” segments.
  3. Retarget across networks. Show Facebook and Instagram ads to people who came from Google, and Search, YouTube and Display ads to people who came from Meta, with the next step they need: reviews, a guarantee or an offer.
  4. Use customer lists. Google Customer Match and Meta customer list custom audiences let you exclude existing customers from acquisition ads or target them with repeat offers.
  5. Count each lead once. Each platform credits conversions by its own rules, and Meta’s attribution can include people who only viewed an ad, so both may claim the same sale. Use UTM tags, GA4 and your CRM to see which channel really delivered.

How do you choose? A five-question test

Answer these five questions and the starting platform usually picks itself.

  1. Do people search for what you sell, by name or by problem? If yes, start with Google Search, and check the volume in Keyword Planner.
  2. Does your product sell on looks or a quick demo? If yes, Meta’s image and video placements give you room to show it.
  3. Do you close sales in conversation? Add click-to-WhatsApp ads on Meta or call assets on Google, whichever platform you pick.
  4. Can you produce fresh images and videos every few weeks? If not, a Search campaign will be easier to sustain than Meta.
  5. Can you track a lead or sale end to end? If not, fix tracking first, because neither platform’s automation can optimize without it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Instagram advertising part of Facebook Ads?

Yes. Instagram ads are created in Meta Ads Manager, the same tool used for Facebook ads, and one campaign can run on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp Status, Threads and the Audience Network. Advantage+ placements let Meta choose where each ad appears, or you can pick placements yourself, for example only Instagram Stories and Reels.

Is YouTube advertising part of Google Ads?

Yes. YouTube ads are bought through Google Ads using Video campaigns, Demand Gen campaigns or Performance Max, which also reaches YouTube. That gives Google Ads a discovery channel similar to Meta’s video placements, so a business already running Google Search can test video ads without opening a separate ad account.

Should I boost Facebook posts or use Ads Manager?

Boosting a post from a Facebook Page or Instagram profile is quick but offers fewer settings than Meta Ads Manager. Ads Manager gives the full choice of objectives, audiences, placements, budgets and conversion tracking, so use it for anything beyond simple engagement. Boosted posts are also opted in to multi-advertiser ads by default, which you can switch off in Ads Manager.

What is a good cost per lead on Google Ads or Meta ads?

There is no universal good cost per lead on Google Ads or Meta ads, because it depends on industry, country, offer and how many leads become customers. Work backwards instead. Example: if a customer is worth $600 in profit and you close one lead in four, you can pay up to $150 per lead before losing money.

What is the difference between Meta ads and Facebook ads?

Meta ads and Facebook ads are the same product under a newer name. Facebook’s parent company is now called Meta, and ads for Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Threads are managed in Meta Ads Manager. People still search for “Facebook ads”, but the ad account, billing and tracking tools all carry the Meta name.
