How to Verify Your Google Business Profile (and Fix Failed Attempts)

Google picks which verification methods you get. Here is how each one works, exactly what to film for video verification, how long reviews take, and what to do when verification fails or Google asks you to verify again.

To verify your Google Business Profile, sign in to the owning Google Account, open the profile on Search or Maps, select Get verified and complete the method Google offers: a video recording, live video call, phone or text code, email, or postcard. Google chooses which options you see, and its review usually takes up to 5 business days.

Verification is what turns a listing into a profile you control. Until it’s done, your photos don’t show, performance data isn’t available and you can’t reply to reviews. It’s also free: Google doesn’t charge to add, verify or reinstate a profile, and it will never ask you for your verification code.

This guide covers each method and when it appears, a shot-by-shot plan for video verification, fixes for failed attempts, and what to do when Google asks you to verify again.

Key takeaways

  • Google decides which verification methods you get, based on business type, public info, region and hours; you can’t choose or change them.
  • Video verification needs one live, unedited recording of at least 30 seconds, filmed and uploaded from your phone through the profile.
  • Film three things: where the business is, proof it exists such as signage or tools, and proof that you manage it.
  • Postcard codes usually arrive within 14 days and expire after 30; editing your name, address or category in the meantime voids the code.
  • Later changes to your name, address or category can trigger re-verification, so settle those details before you start.

Which verification methods does Google offer?

Google has five ways to verify an individual profile, plus instant and bulk routes. It decides which ones you see based on your business type, public information, region and business hours, and some businesses have to complete more than one method.

MethodHow it worksWatch out for
Video recordingYou film a continuous video of your location and business and upload it from your phonePre-recorded or edited clips aren’t accepted; Google recommends this method when you’re eligible
Live video callYou show your location and ownership to a Google support representative on a video callOffered only during your business hours, and not to every business
Phone or textGoogle calls or texts a code to your business number, and you enter it on the profileAn automated phone menu (IVR) can’t receive the code
EmailYou follow the steps in an email sent to the address on the verification screenWorks only if you can open that inbox
PostcardGoogle mails a 5-digit code to your business addressNot available to all businesses; the code expires after 30 days
InstantGoogle verifies the profile automaticallyCan happen when your website is already verified in Google Search Console
BulkOne request covers every eligible location in your accountNeeds 10 or more locations of the same business; not for service-area businesses or agencies managing several businesses

How to verify your Google Business Profile, step by step

The route is the same whichever method you get: find or create the profile, check its details, then complete the method shown on screen.

  1. Sign in to the right Google Account. It becomes the profile owner, so use an account the business controls. It can be a Gmail address, and you can link a company email to it.
  2. Find your profile. Search Google for my business or your business name and city, or open the Google Maps app and tap Business. If the business isn’t on Google yet, add it at business.google.com/add.
  3. Claim an existing listing. If an unverified profile already exists, open it on Google Maps and select Claim this business → Manage now.
  4. Check the details first. Make sure the name matches your signage and the address or service area is correct, because editing them later can mean verifying again.
  5. Select Get verified. Choose one of the methods listed and follow the steps below.
  6. Wait for the review. Google reviews most submissions within 5 business days and emails you when the profile is verified.

If someone else has already verified the profile, you’ll see a message that someone else may manage it. Select Request access and complete the form. The current owner has 3 days to respond, and if they don’t, you may be offered the option to claim the profile yourself.

How does Google Business Profile video verification work?

You record one continuous video on your phone, inside the Business Profile flow, showing where the business is, that it exists and that you manage it. Google reviews it within 5 business days, and if it isn’t accepted, Google tells you why.

The rules your video must meet

  • Captured live and uploaded from the profile on a mobile device. You can’t upload a pre-recorded file, or record offline and upload later.
  • Unedited, unique and complete, with no breaks, and at least 30 seconds long.
  • Free of sensitive information such as bank account, tax or ID numbers, private details about you or anyone else, and other people’s faces.

A shot plan that covers everything

  1. Start outside at the nearest street sign or building number, then pan slowly across the businesses on either side.
  2. Walk to your entrance and hold the camera on the signboard until the full name is readable.
  3. Go inside and show the counter, products, equipment or workspace.
  4. Open something only staff can access: use your keys on the door, open the till or storeroom, or log in to the point-of-sale screen.
  5. Keep the camera rolling from start to finish, and check that the recording passes the 30-second minimum before you stop.

How to record and upload

On your phone, open your Business Profile and tap Get verified (you may be asked for a phone number first), then Business video → Next. Read the requirements, allow access to your location, camera and microphone, and tap Start recording. Review the clip when you finish, then tap Try again to re-record or Upload video to submit.

Can you verify a Google Business Profile without video?

Yes, but only if Google offers you another method; you can’t request one it hasn’t shown. Look for phone or text, email or postcard among your options, and check whether instant verification applies.

  • Phone or text: make sure a person can answer the business number or read texts sent to it, then enter the code on your profile.
  • Email: choose this only if you can open the inbox shown on the verification screen.
  • Postcard: confirm your mailing address, request the code once, and leave your name, address and category alone until it arrives. Most codes arrive within 14 days.
  • Search Console: if your website is verified in Google Search Console, Google may verify the profile instantly. Using the same Google Account for both keeps things simple.
  • Bulk verification: chains with 10 or more locations of the same business can apply in Business Profile Manager under Verifications → Chain.

A live video call is the other alternative to a recorded video, though you’re still on camera. It runs only during your business hours, so be at the premises with keys and access to staff-only areas ready.

If video is your only option and you have no permanent signage, check how the business is set up. Google says a business without permanent on-site signage should be listed as a service-area business, which changes what your video needs to show.

Why did your Google Business Profile verification fail?

Failed attempts fall into three groups: missing evidence, a mismatch between the profile and the real world, or a method that couldn’t reach you. Match what you see to the fix below.

What you seeLikely causeWhat to do
“Review issues” after a videoSomething was missing, such as the business name not visible on the storefront, no nearby area shown, or no proof you’re authorized to run the businessTap Review issues and record a new video that includes everything from the first one plus the missing items
Name mismatchYour signboard shows a different name from the profileChange the profile name to your real-world name; never add keywords
Storefront with no signageThe business is set up as a storefront but has no permanent signSwitch to a service-area setup and hide the address
Phone code never arrivesThe number goes through an automated menu, or nobody can take the callUse a direct line, or choose text if it’s offered
Postcard code rejectedYou edited the name, address or category, requested a second code, or the code is more than 30 days oldRequest one new code and make no edits until it arrives
“Get verified” appears againGoogle couldn’t fully verify the businessRe-verify, trying another method if more than one is shown
Video won’t uploadAn upload errorUpload it again; Google notes that videos sometimes fail on the first try
Common verification problems and fixes

Two situations can’t be fixed by trying again. Online-only businesses aren’t eligible for a profile, and neither are virtual offices or P.O. boxes, because Google requires in-person contact with customers during your stated hours, at your location or theirs.

Why is Google asking you to verify again?

Google can ask for re-verification after your business details change. Its help pages say a name change may require verifying again, a move to a new address does require it, and adding or editing categories may trigger it.

  • Plan core edits around a real rebrand or move, not as a series of experiments.
  • Make one change at a time, and wait until it’s accepted before the next.
  • Keep evidence ready: clear signage, a utility bill or invoice in the business name, and access to the premises.
  • Never create a new profile to avoid re-verification. Duplicates are against Google’s policies and don’t appear on Search or Maps.

If the profile shows as suspended or disabled instead, that’s a guideline problem with its own appeal process, covered in our guide to fixing a suspended Google Business Profile. Once you’re verified, work through our Google Business Profile optimization checklist to complete every field.

How do service-area and home-based businesses verify?

The same way, with different evidence. If customers don’t come to you, hide the address before you verify: go to Edit profile → Location, turn off Show business address to customers, and list the areas you serve.

  • Film street signs and landmarks near your base; if you work from home, your immediate neighborhood is enough.
  • Show the tools and equipment you work with, plus a branded vehicle, business cards or uniforms if you have them.
  • Prove management by performing part of a service, opening a branded vehicle with your keys, or showing a permit, invoice or utility bill that matches the profile name.
  • Avoid filming empty land or places with no clear markers.

Outside the US, don’t count on a postcard: Google says mail verification isn’t available for all businesses. Pakistani businesses can use our guide to setting up a profile in Pakistan for local address and phone formats, and our article on SEO for service-area businesses covers ranking once you’re verified.

What if no verification option works?

Work through these checks before you contact Google, because its support team asks you to try the available methods first.

  1. Confirm you’re eligible: the business must meet customers in person during its stated hours, at your location or theirs.
  2. Look for an existing or duplicate profile, and request ownership if someone else verified it.
  3. Open the profile on your phone, since video recordings can only be made and uploaded from a mobile device, then try every method listed.
  4. If you’re still stuck, use the contact options in Google Business Profile Help, or ask in the Business Profile Community.
  5. Ignore anyone selling guaranteed or instant verification. Google doesn’t charge for Business Profiles and never asks for your code, a one-time password or payment.

If you manage several locations and verification keeps stalling, our local SEO service can take over verification and upkeep for all of them.

How TechZone can help

If verification keeps failing, or you’d rather not risk a suspension through trial-and-error edits, our Google Business Profile specialists can review your setup against Google’s guidelines, plan the evidence for your verification video and correct the details that cause rejections. Google expects the business owner to own the profile, with any agency added as a manager, and that’s the setup we recommend. Frequently asked questions

Can an agency verify my Google Business Profile for me?

An agency can help, but Google expects the business owner to be involved. Its guidelines say authorized representatives must work directly with the owner to complete verification and should encourage the owner to own the profile, adding the agency as a manager. For video verification, an authorized representative has to be at the business location.

Why can’t I see the Get verified button on my Business Profile?

First check that you’re signed in to the Google Account linked to the Business Profile, because management options only appear for that account. If you also can’t find a Claim this business or Own this business option, Google says you might already be the owner, possibly through a different Google Account you use.

Does verifying a Google Business Profile help it rank?

Verification is the first tip on Google’s own list for improving local ranking, because it shows Google you’re authorized to represent the business, making the profile more likely to appear in results. Google also says only verified businesses can show their business information on Maps and Search, so an unverified profile starts at a disadvantage.

Is it safe to give my verification code to the company managing my profile?

No. Google says to keep the verification code secure and not to share it with anyone, including people who manage your Business Profile, and Google itself will never ask for it. Enter the code on the profile yourself, then add your agency or staff as managers once verification is complete.

Can I delete my verification video after I’m verified?

Yes. On your phone, open your Business Profile, tap More, then Business Profile settings, then Advanced settings, and under Video uploads tap Delete videos. If you don’t delete the verification video, Google deletes it later. Cancelling an upload partway through removes access to the video for both you and Google.
