Amazon Listing Optimization: Titles, Bullets, Images and A+ Content

How to optimize every field of an Amazon listing under the 2026 rules: 75-character titles and Item Highlights, bullets, backend search terms, image specs, A+ Content, reviews and the Featured Offer.

Amazon listing optimization is the work of shaping each part of a product detail page, the title, Item Highlights, bullet points, images, backend search terms and A+ Content, so Amazon’s search matches it to the right queries and shoppers who see it choose to buy. In 2026 the biggest change is a 75-character limit on titles.

Amazon’s own guide to Amazon SEO names seven levers: keyword research, titles, descriptions, bullet points, backend search terms, images and price. None of them is a trick; each helps Amazon understand the product or helps a shopper decide faster.

Below, each field gets its current rules and a working method, plus notes for Amazon’s UK, UAE, Canadian and Australian stores and a checklist.

Key takeaways

  • Since July 27, 2026, Amazon titles in every category except media must be 75 characters or fewer, including spaces.
  • Item Highlights add 125 searchable characters, and Amazon says Item name and Item highlights carry equal weight in search.
  • Keep backend search terms under 250 bytes on Amazon.com and fill them with synonyms and alternate names, not repeats.
  • A+ Content requires Amazon Brand Registry, which requires a trademark issued in a country that has an Amazon store.
  • The Featured Offer favors a competitive total price, fast and reliable delivery, stock on hand and a clean order record.

How does Amazon search decide which listings to show?

Amazon search first finds listings whose words match the query, then decides the order. Amazon doesn’t publish its formula, but its seller guide says competitive pricing, better images, listing quality and account health can all help a product move up. You control relevance through your text and influence the order through everything else.

Where to find the keywords Amazon shoppers use

  • The Amazon search box: type your product type and mine the drop-down suggestions.
  • Competitor listings: scan titles, bullets and customer questions on the top results.
  • Product Opportunity Explorer: Amazon’s tool for top search terms and demand trends in a niche.
  • Brand Analytics: for Brand Registry brands, Search Query Performance shows the queries that bring shoppers to your brand, and Top Search Terms shows how often terms are searched.
  • Sponsored Products search term reports: the real queries that triggered your ads and sales.

Mix short-tail terms, such as “water bottle”, with long-tail phrases, such as “insulated water bottle with straw lid”. Long-tail phrases have lower volume but more specific intent, which often makes them easier to win with a new listing. Give every keyword one home:

FieldWhat goes there
Item name (title)Brand, product type, main keyword and the most important attribute
Item highlightsMaterials, key features and use cases that didn’t fit the title
Bullet pointsBenefits and specs in the order buyers ask about them
Description or A+ ContentLonger explanation, comparisons and brand story
Search terms (hidden)Synonyms, abbreviations and alternate names not used elsewhere
Where each type of keyword belongs in an Amazon listing

What are Amazon’s product title rules in 2026?

From July 27, 2026, titles in all categories except media must be 75 characters or fewer, including spaces. A new Item Highlights field adds 125 characters that are searchable and display beneath the title in search results and on the product page. Amazon announced the change to US sellers and to European sellers, including Amazon.co.uk.

In its follow-up answers to sellers, Amazon says discoverability is unchanged: Item name and Item highlights are both search inputs, and neither is prioritized. You still have 200 characters in total, split across two fields.

How to write a 75-character Amazon title

  1. Start with the brand name, as Amazon recommends.
  2. Add the product type in shoppers’ words, such as “insulated water bottle”, not an internal model name.
  3. Add the most important variation attributes, such as size, color or pack count, and move any that don’t fit to Item highlights.
  4. Put materials, features and use cases in Item highlights.
  5. Follow the title rules from January 2025, which still apply: no !, $, ?, _, {, }, ^, ¬ or ¦ unless part of the brand name, and no word more than twice, except prepositions, articles and conjunctions.

Example

A fictional brand. Item name (69 characters): YourBrand Insulated Water Bottle, Stainless Steel, 32 oz, Matte Black. Item highlights: Double-wall vacuum insulation, leak-proof straw lid, fits most car cup holders, BPA-free.

What happens if you don’t shorten long titles

After July 27, Amazon began replacing titles over 75 characters with AI-generated versions, gradually through 2026. Brand owners get 14 days to review, change or approve each one in Review Listing Changes, and every seller can see applied changes under View Change History in Manage All Inventory.

Check each AI suggestion for dropped details, such as “compatible with” wording on accessories, pack sizes or a variant. To see suggestions, choose Edit on a listing in Manage All Inventory and click View enhancements. For many ASINs, download the Category Listings report, fill in both fields and upload it through the List Your Products tool.

How do you write bullet points, the description and backend search terms?

Bullets sell, the description explains, and backend search terms catch queries your visible text can’t hold. Don’t paste the same sentences into all three.

Bullet points

You get up to five bullets. Amazon’s advice is to open each with a one- or two-word label, follow it with an explanation of 100 characters or fewer, and write in fragments. Order them by the questions buyers ask: what it does, what it’s made of, whether it fits, how to care for it and what’s in the box. Your customer questions and critical reviews are the brief.

Product description

Use the description for materials, dimensions, quantities, care and warranty, worked in with secondary keywords. Amazon warns that keyword stuffing hurts the customer experience and can hurt rankings: a key phrase used once rarely needs repeating. If you add A+ Content, its modules appear under the Product Description heading.

Backend search terms

Search terms are hidden keywords stored in the listing. Amazon counts the field in bytes, not characters, and on Amazon.com the limit is less than 250 bytes. Plain letters and numbers take one byte each; accented and non-Latin characters take two or more, which matters in French, German or Arabic listings.

  • Add synonyms, abbreviations, alternate names and spelling variants missing from visible fields.
  • Write in lowercase, separate words with single spaces and skip punctuation, articles and prepositions.
  • Don’t repeat words, and leave out competitor brand names, ASINs and claims such as “best” or “sale”.

To edit them, choose Edit on the listing in Manage All Inventory and find the Search Terms field, which inventory files call generic keyword.

What are Amazon’s image and video requirements?

Every listing needs at least one image, and Amazon recommends at least six images and one video. The main image appears in search results, so it follows strict rules; the other slots are where you sell.

RequirementRule or recommendation
Size500 to 10,000 pixels on the longest side; over 1,000 pixels enables zoom
File formatJPEG preferred; TIFF, PNG and non-animated GIF accepted
Main image backgroundPure white: RGB 255, 255, 255
Main image framingThe whole product, filling 85% or more of the frame
Main image contentOnly what the buyer receives: no props, text, logos, badges or watermarks
Additional imagesProduct in use, detail close-ups, dimensions, what’s in the box, instructions
Amazon product image requirements (2026)

Non-compliant images can be rejected or removed, and a bad main image can suppress a listing from search. Shoot on a true white background or clip it cleanly, and test every image on a phone, where small infographic text becomes unreadable.

What is Amazon A+ Content, and who can use it?

A+ Content, formerly Enhanced Brand Content, adds image-and-text modules, comparison charts and brand content under the Product Description heading. It’s free, but only for Professional sellers with a brand enrolled in Amazon Brand Registry.

TypeWho can use itWhat it adds
Basic A+ ContentBrand Registry sellersUp to five modules per ASIN: text, images, logo, comparison and specification charts
Brand StoryBrand Registry sellersA “From the brand” section with carousels and links to your other products and Brand Store
Premium A+ ContentRegistered brands that meet Amazon’s criteriaUp to seven modules per ASIN, adding video, full-width images, hotspots, carousels and Q&A
The three types of Amazon A+ Content

Build it under Advertising, then A+ Content Manager: pick an ASIN, choose the type, add modules, preview on mobile and submit for review. Amazon claims Basic A+ Content can lift sales by up to 8% and Premium by up to 20%; treat those as Amazon’s figures, not a forecast. Common rejection causes:

  • Pricing, promotions, shipping details, QR codes, links or contact information
  • Claims such as “best-selling” or “top-rated”, warranty text, or comparisons with competitors
  • Low-resolution or animated images, or image files over 2 MB
  • Awards or endorsements without the certifying body and year

Pakistan note

Brand Registry needs a registered or pending trademark issued in a country that has an Amazon store. Pakistan doesn’t have one, so a Pakistani brand needs a trademark from a country that does, usually the market it sells in, such as the US or the UK. Amazon’s IP Accelerator connects brands with vetted trademark firms.

They decide whether a shopper who finds you actually buys, and depend on product and service more than copy.

Getting reviews within Amazon’s rules

  • Use the Request a Review button on the Order details page in Seller Central.
  • With Brand Registry and FBA offers, enroll new products in Amazon Vine, which sends free units to invited reviewers who post honest opinions.
  • Brand owners can use the Customer Reviews tool to contact customers who leave critical ratings and offer a refund or help.
  • Never reward customers for reviews or ask them to post positive reviews or remove negative ones. Amazon’s guidelines forbid any attempt to influence ratings.

When several sellers offer the same product, Amazon features the most competitive offers in the Offer Display, the Add to Cart box sellers call the Buy Box. Amazon’s guidance points to four levers:

  • Competitive total price: featured prices, shipping included, are commonly at or below the lowest alternatives. Pricing Health flags ineligible offers.
  • Fast, free, reliable delivery: narrower delivery ranges help.
  • A clean order record: the correct, undamaged, authentic item, charged correctly.
  • Stock: an out-of-stock offer can’t be featured.

A price that’s too low can also make an offer ineligible, because Amazon may suspect a pricing error.

How do Alexa for Shopping and other Amazon stores change listing work?

Both reward listings that answer questions clearly for the local shopper. On May 13, 2026, Amazon combined Rufus with Alexa+ as Alexa for Shopping for US customers, who can now ask questions in the main search bar, compare products side by side and read AI-generated overviews in search results and on product pages.

Amazon hasn’t published how the assistant chooses products. State the facts shoppers ask about in plain words, such as dimensions, compatibility, materials and what’s included, and fill in every structured attribute. An assistant can only summarize what your listing and reviews say.

Selling on Amazon UK, UAE, Canada and Australia

  • Amazon’s Build International Listings tool can copy offers from a source store, convert prices and attempt machine translation; review every listing it creates.
  • Localize: UK and Australian listings need spellings such as “colour” and local units, so research keywords in each store’s own search box.
  • Amazon requires detail pages in each store’s local language. Amazon.ae shoppers can switch the store to Arabic, so check your category’s language fields there.
  • The 75-character rule was announced for Amazon.com and the European stores; confirm limits for other stores in Seller Central News before a bulk edit.

Frequently asked questions

How long do Amazon listing changes take to go live?

Amazon says listing updates uploaded in bulk through the List Your Products tool are typically live within eight hours. Ranking changes take longer, because sales and conversion data only build up once shoppers see the new version. Judge an Amazon listing change on sessions, conversion rate and sales over several weeks, and change one element at a time.

Fulfillment by Amazon is not required to win the Featured Offer. Amazon says fulfilling orders yourself can be just as effective as using its fulfillment network, provided delivery is fast, free where possible and has reliable dates. FBA still helps sellers who struggle with shipping speed or customer service, because Amazon handles packing, delivery, returns and support for FBA orders.

Can a reseller change an Amazon product listing?

A reseller usually can’t rewrite an Amazon product listing that belongs to a registered brand. Amazon says that once a brand enrolls in Brand Registry, only the brand and sellers associated with it can create or suggest updates to its product detail pages through standard listing processes. Resellers compete on price, delivery and service for the Featured Offer instead.

An Amazon listing is usually suppressed from search because required information is missing or content breaks a policy, and image problems, such as a main image without a pure white background, are a common cause. Amazon lists affected products on the Fix your products page in Seller Central, and file failures appear under Submission status. Correct the flagged field or image and resubmit it.

Is Amazon SEO the same as Google SEO?

Amazon SEO and Google SEO share keyword research but work differently. Amazon ranks products inside its own store using listing text plus signals such as price and sales. Google ranks web pages from across the internet using signals such as content quality, links and page experience. A brand that sells in both places needs Amazon-specific listings and a separately optimized website, not the same copy pasted twice.
